It’s no surprise to hear of the importance of consuming fresh air—namely you, you science nerd. Our respiratory drive requires that we expel carbon dioxide. Thankfully, our outdoor photosynthetic acquaintances can absorb this CO2 and provide us with much needed O2 in return. Throughout this lockdown, I have found great pleasure in passing my time outdoors to observe this underrated air exchange and the beauty within the greenery. I will admit that not every day is filled with butterflies and sunflowers, and that some days end with an overwhelming sense of guilt when I glance at my growing to-do list.
Of all the frustrations during the present lockdown I have pinpointed my main frustration trigger—lack of productivity. I’m sure many students can relate to the feeling of a constant requirement to be productive in order to prove to yourself and others that you are worthy. I’m here to tell you to stop. I know, easier said than done…but your happiness is of utmost importance during this standstill.
My escape from virtual learning involves jumping on my bike to ride on a nearby nature trail. But hey, there is no shame in being the indoorsy-type of person, too! I can thank this misunderstood crowd for their devotion in finding which television series are worth my time. I will challenge this population to find an indoor activity (which brings you happiness) that will allow for oxygen exchange. Participating in meditation, a workout video, a yelling match with a younger sibling, or buying a succulent will suffice. While there is no magical cure from ‘fresh-air,’ it has been shown to energize, reduce risk of disease, and help with relaxation. So, this is a subtle reminder that it is totally normal to feel low during this dark time. Just remember to act as a sunflower: stand tall and find the sunlight.
